I've been growing these for about five years, I grow them and Lidl's gherkins. I do some in the greenhouse for an earlier crop and some outside. They just do their thing and they're very low maintenance. I get the seeds from the organic catalogue.

We're growing them for the first time this year.
Not read anything about needing to remove the male flowers, but I did read if you let them dry out too much that they can become bitter??
Snadger...I still have loads of seeds left,if you want me to throw a few your way then PM me your addy.

I am giving them a go this year as well, 1st time. I planted 2 seeds one doing well well. Sad to say the other grew distorted then withered half way up the stem. planted more seeds yesterday. Thanks to a lovely grape for the seeds!

Seed and growing info in link below!

I'm growing these for the first year also and plan to grow them outdoors.

For those of you that have grown them outdoors, how big does the plant get?

I had only a few of these seeds and only 1 has come up and I hope for a few more seedlings but if I only have 1 plant - will the flowers get fertilised? I expect this is a silly question but dont you need 2 plants so the bees can fertilise one plant from pollen from another plant? Or have I got my plant biology mixed up?

The plant will grow both male and female flowers - the pollen from the male flowers can fertilise females on the same plant, does not necessarily have to be a different plant. Also, I believe cucurbits are very promiscuous so even if there isn't another cuke nearby it will probably be happy with pollen from something else e.g. pumpkin, courgette, melon, squash...

The nice chap at the Ryton Organic shop where i got my burpless tasty green cucumber seeds and my crystal lemon said you leave on the flowers so need to worry about taking them off. I have just put mine out on the plot today two of each and have kept two of each back just incase those slimy little critters take a liking to them!
