  • 2nd earlies?

I only got my plot in May and managed to get some seed spuds off ebay in late May I think

I ordered Pink Fir Apple and Picasso Maincrop. Because there wasn't a full measure of PFA they sent me some Nadine which I believe is a second early.

I grew the tatties and have them in store in paper sacks. To my dismay when I picked the sack of nadine up to move them the bottom fell out and on closer inspection about half the tatties are rotten.

The Picasso are perfect and the PFA have an odd dodgy one but are generally ok.

Could this be because the Nadine are second early and just won't store or should 2nd earlies store ok?

Earlies don't store Snadger, they are best dug & eaten fresh.

Hello Snadger, the glory of earlies is that they are new and fresh. I grow mine in buckets and just use them a bucket at a time. There is a school of thought that says they are past their best once they have been 3 days out of the ground (although they do "keep" a bit longer.) They are certainly not for long term storage. For my money, Charlotte produced the best flavour, Nadine and Nicolla produced good crops. Sounds like the dancing girls.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

So would it have been best if, instead of lifting all of them I had just lifted what I needed, as I needed them, ie two or three shy's per lifting?

Thats what I normally do Snadger. Just lift enough for a couple of meals. That way you are always eating lovely freshly dug spuds.

Yes Snadger, as I said , the glory of new potatoes is that they are NEW. Just lift what you wanr for a meal or two. They can't be stored and if you do they are not worth a candle. Better luck for next year. We all live and learn. I just try not to forget what I already knew.

I think I've learned the hard way which unfortunately is sometimes the best way to learn! Lol
