  • Tying over garlic?

I was talking to my mother yesterday, telling her all about my veg , and I was telling her how high my garlic was, and she said 'Have you tied the tops over yet?' so naturally I said '?'.
She told me when my grandfather used to grow garlic, he'd bend and tie the tops over to encourage the bulb to swell.
Has anyone done ever done this?

I have heard of doing this with daffs and tulips and alike to feed the bulb for next spring! Have never heard of it for garlic though? Mind you there is a mass of things to do with growing food and floweres that I don't know about! Someone on here will know I bet!! Thats why Im here to learn!!

I've read that tying the tops of daffodils to 'feed the bulb' is actually an urban myth, and it was really more to do with being tidy! I think it was Alan Titch?
I've never heard of doing it to garlic, but if you have enough you could do a trial - tie some and leave some, see which gets you the best bulbs?

yeah keeping tidy as well! I think that is the best thing about tying the leaves, otherwise they look so untidy sprawling everywhere! is a space saver aswell leaving room to put other plants without them getting smothered!

I think tying the leaves over is jjust to make them tidy when the leaves start to die and get all floppy. Well that's why I tie my daffodils . The garlic doesn't get too unsightly so I don't do it.

I've heard of bending the leaves over with onions, but not garlic, also think its a bit of a myth?
