Come on then, lets have your recommended potatoe variety for 2007!

You've all done your amateur trials this year, so whats been good and whats been bad?

I would like to grow two good maincrop and an early for next year and am looking for inspiration!

I always grow Arran Pilot which is an early. The taste is good and you get decent sized spuds.

We always grow Charlotte, as they can be picked tiny for salads or left to grow big for chips! ( They are also v expensive to buy in the shops!!!)
They have done just as well in peat as in heavy clay.

I think its got to be Charlotte. The flavour was superb. Red Rooster gave a heavy crop, and as a roasting potato I don't think it can be beaten, but I don't rate it as a boiled potato. It's horses for courses and what you like and want.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

So let me get this straight, earlies won't store but main will?

How many of each type do you plant?

This is my first year and I like both new/salad pot and main pots. Just trying to get to grips.

Its the first time i've ever grown earlies this year and I thought I would get til christmas storing them but this has proved not to be!

Next year I am going to plant three 10ft rows of earlies(variety to be determined) and harvest as required, standard 3Kg bag of seed tatties? and the rest will be maincrop(probably 2 or 3 varieties)

Thanks Snadger, thats a great help, I read your earlier thread about earlies not storing which I didn't know either.

I was also planning on a couple varieties of earlies and the same for maincrop haven't a clue on varieties but charlotte seems quite popular on here. Might give them a go.

                  Hi Bex,

I grew 2 earlies & 2 second earlies (3 rows in total I think - have to look at the records)

                  Earlies
                  Rocket & Winston

                  2nd Earlies
                  Nadine & Charlotte

Then for maincrop I grew Piccasso & Maxine

The Winston didn't perform as well in the ground as it did in tubs last year so I think I'm going to revert to either Arran Pilot or Suttons Foremost & Rocket which always does well on my lottie.

The Nadine & Charlotte are superb & I'll grow them again, But the Maincrop are the sticking point at the moment. I love the taste of Charlotte but the slugs murdered them so I've got to find one to go with Piccasso.

I only grow a few tatties, one Angus seems to be centre of the tattie growing universe so I get them from local suppliers and two there are only 2 of us at home now.I can recommend pink fur apple as a lovely new tasting waxy spud.A rather odd shape but we have had good quantity and quality which I shall grow again next year, note they don't roast very well though.
