  • Does anyone use water from their fish tank on their veg?

When I do a water change in our fish tanks I normally put the old water onto the plants, they thrive on it, must be the fish waste in there.

I was wondering if it would be safe to use on vegetable and fruit plants etc.

Yes, good idea. Fish excrete ammonia but it soon gets broken down in the tank into nitrates which is good for plants. Assuming you keep a freshwater tank and not a saltwater one. The veg won't appreciate salty water.

Yes, a good friend of ours always uses his fish-tank water on his chillis and peppers. He was saying something about nitrates (or was it nitrites )... But his plants are thriving on it anyway

Possibly both. The ammonia that comes out of the fish is broken down first into nitrites and then into nitrates. Any given bucket of used fish water will contain some of all three, mostly nitrates as this is what builds up (unless you grow water plants that is, they will use up the nitrates!)

Don't overdo it or the fish will have to become amphibians

I keep goldfish in my water butt (to eat the mozzie larvae) and obviously they poop into the water that I use for watering.

Can't you just put a lid on?

Must make filling a watering can a bit of an adventure! How many times have you accidentally scooped a fish up? Crikey, I hope your watering can has a fine rose!

Anytime I open the fish tank lid, my cat likes to drink the water.

I change my chooks water each day and water different plants with the residue each day.
