all planted , plus a cracked recycling bin from next door which now has a courgette nestling happiily in lots of my compost.

I have become hooked, just cleared all the accumulation of broken canes, weeds ,stones and rubbish off a paved bit at end of garden to put the next lot on (dwarf beans). I have been going to clear it for about 5 years, just needed a push!!

so, that's a veggie patch, half the flower bed and a paved bit in use...

If I lay my hands on any of these flower buckets, do you think I could chop the bottoms off them and place them in a grow bag for my tomatoes?

I have sent my son on a mission this year to find some large plastic water fountain bottles to make cloches he got me a large blue plastic water barrel for me last year just for asking at a factory were they make them. Hears Hoping xxxxx

My OH gets mine from the flower sellers in the town centre. I have 10 planted up with potatoes. In the greenhouse I grow my toms, cucumbers in them . This year planning to grow a couple of melons in them!

I looked at Morrisons flower buckets-are you talking about these squre,tall,not so wide ones?I never asked for them in the shop as I thought they would be too small to accomodate tomatoes,not to mention potatoes.
This year I managed to scrounge 10 flower buckets from tesco,they are much bigger than morrisons ones.
Please put me right if I'm wrong.
If Morrisons ones are big enough for toms,maybe I could get some of them and use the bigger tesco ones for tatties(as my tattie plot doesn't exist this year).

That's what they have in my Morrisons, I didn't think they would be much use for anything.

Ours are about 9" diameter for the 'smaller' ones and 10" for the slightly larger ones - perfect for chillies and tomatoes I'd have thought.

Next time I'll go there with measuring tape

Seriously,they looked like 6'' at most(at the top),more like a flower vase,square and quite tall.I couldn't see the use for them unless I'm wrong and they are big enough to accommodate tomato plants.

Then there obviously two types!

It was quite easy to measure the ones at home!

Morrisons seem to have changed their flower buckets from the black buckets to these slim green holders that look like a permenant structure. Also Asda used to give them away for free if you asked nicely as they used to throw them away, but my local asda told me they are now returning them to the flower supplier to be re-used. Co-op are still throwing theirs away though if you have one nearby.

I think there is a general movement towards reducing the amount of plastic they throw away, which is great and it seems that the black buckets days are numbered!
