The growing system has developed over the last 3 years.

The basic bed is 8x4 feet and I started by adding solid sides and raising them as the plants grew.

The latest is the 'squash houses' which allow light in all the way up.

Despite the perceived beauty of the system, there appears to be little difference in the end result and as can be seen, the outside squash performed nearly as well as those under cover and this year I intend to grow more outside and try growing melons under cover.

The main problem with growing outside is that one plant can cover an area of 30 square metres.

I learn more every year and that is why I find my own blog interesting and presumably the 15,000 others who have seen it (I have had emails from all five continents).

I also found your blog earlier this year, found it inspirational. Then pestered MR Herbie to make me a new coldframe, which has now been built and contains my butternut squash! So following your method this year but on a smaller scale with less plants etc Quite excited now to see how they turn out.
My coldframe is similar but with out the removable sides, as I want to be able to use it as a coldframe throughout the year, at the moment I have some lavender plants in there with the squash that I grew from seed Thankyou for sharing.
