  • potatomato?

When I was little my friends dad used to grow plants which produced potatoes under the soil and tomatoes above.

I have produced far more tomato plants then i need so i was thinking instead of composting then i would try and graft it onto the stem of a potatoe plant, I am presuming this is how he did it.

Am I right in thinking it should be posible to graft the two as they are in the same family or am i completely wrong?

If you have tried this before how did you do it?

I think you will find that the 'tomato' was actually the potato plant setting seed. Flummery and Duronal were experimenting last year - do a quick search and see what you can find.

I think Tootles will be spot on.

Please do not try to eat the "fruit" produced by potatoes - it is from the nightshade family and poisonous !!!!

If you did do a graft then the roots will be likely to limit the tomato to setting only a few fruit and the fruit that do set will also cause the tuber crop to be reduced.
The proof of the growing is in the eating.
      Leave Rotten Fruit.
      Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potasium - potash.
      Autant de têtes, autant d'avis!!!!!

I grafted a tomato seedling onto a potato plant last year. I got loads of tomatoes but only about 6 grape sized potatoes. It was a fun experiment, and by the size of the spuds I pulled them too soon, but I think I will leave the "Tomtatoes" for others to try in the future.

It actually works better the other way around, but you don't get anything useful of course. You only get a short season with a tomtato because potatoes go dormant, whereas tomatoes want to keep growing. I can't help thinking that degrees of success will depend on which variety is used. I bet a late-maturing potato like Golden Wonder or Pink Fir Apple will give better results.

By the way, had anyone tried potato fruits? They are utterly rank, extraordinarily bitter. But they do smell quite delicious, like melon.

felix, the potato fruits are poisonous (and related to deadly nightshade) ... don't eat them

That would be great idea-if you only could get longer frost-free growing season for potatoms

A Tomtater is something I experimented with once. It did work, but I reckom a potatoe leaved tomato like Tamina would be best grafted to a late maincrop like PFA (which has already been mentioned).

The graft took on mine quite easily but it's that long ago I can't remember the eventual outcome!

Tomato's are also related to deadly nightshade, however, I'm not saying I would eat the seed pod/fruit of a potato plant, but is it possible to grow potato's from them?
