  • Is it still to early

To plant out my one cucumber plant into an un-heated greenhouse . I don't want to loose it but it's 6 inches high now with proper leaves and I think I can see a flower bud .

It has two chances , up or down.

    Hi Divvy.

I hardened mine off weeks ago by putting into a plastic container lined in bubblewrap and they went into the unheated greenhouse last night. It's all about the hardening off and the lowest temps...so if you have hardened it off it should be ready to go out soon. If not, it needs that before it will be ready.

I would plant it up into a 5 inch pot (assuming the roots are showing out the bottom of its current pot) and put it in the greenhouse in the daytime. Fleece it overnight for a week to 10 days and then it should be okay to stay out there overnight without fleece. Depends on how chilly your greenhouse gets though. Mine hasn't been below 10C for weeks and my cukes are sown out there.

I've put one of mine in the unheated greenhouse and it's staying out there on it's own for the first time tonight in the pot which it's going to be staying in for the summer. It's a bit earlier than I do normally but I have back up so am not too worried.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I'd only just sown mine last weekend in the heated propagator, but once they showed through (Weds) I've put them in the unheated greenhouse in the day, and back in the propagator at night with the heat turned off. Tonight they are staying 'out' all night.
I've got more seeds if they do take a chill, but I think they should be OK, the temp hasn't been that low at nights here for some time. The butternut squash have been planted outside for over a week and are looking fine.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!
