  • Well now...

Yesterday I harvested. 2 carrier bags of peas (now in the freezer) some carrots. 3 green and 3 yellow courgettes, lettuce, carrots, radishes, some raspberries, parsley, lemon balm, and an early turnip. I'm wondering if I can cut, cook and eat the small (apple sized) pumpkins I want to remove and leave the bigger one to mature.

        • Today I harvested my very first MELON.!!!!
As I have never grown them before I didn't know when it would be ready for picking. The greenhouse has smelt very "Melony" for the past few days. I even had a prod at the melons in Tesco this am. to see how firm theirs were!! I have three plants and each one has/had a melon on it. They are supported by little mesh bags and I noticed this morning that my biggest melon's bag was beginning to disintegrate.
On checking it the stalk was almost severed at the join so the problem of when to harvest was solved.
Probably because I am biased but it is the best melon I have ever tasted and it was still warm from the greenhouse. How's that for fresh.
Now, can anybody advise/enlighten me please.
The variety is Emir and I think it's F1. I know F1s do not reproduce true but the seed is quite expensive. Is it possible to grow further melons from these seeds next year if I save them?
I am already doing an experiment with Galia melons which I havested from a Tesco's one earlier in the year.
I had just reached the point with these plants where I thought they were a waste of space and lo and behold they have started to produce little melons. It remains to be seen whether they are actually edible but I live in hope.
