  • A large handful of Orla potatoes (from a potato bag in the greenhouse) - first of the season for me, yummy! Together with a plate of yellow mange-tout - also the first this year...
Oh, and a Dragons Egg cucumber!

    • Strawberries... again. I'm sick of them already. Must have had at LEAST 2.5kg now. Still bags more to go.

Cover the broad beans with loads of white sauce, I used to love them like that when I was little. I use the all in one method for making the sauce (shout if you need the recipe).

          • Today we enjoyed Lettuce, Beetroot and Spinach. We've eaten the first of the Early spuds, we''l have to wait until middle of June for the next lot. We also picked flowers, Cornflowers, Sweet Peas and Sweet Williams. We are happy bunnies

            • Strawbs and rasps, broad beans and the first new potatoes. Very very small new potatoes, terribly uneconomical, and I should be ashamed, etc etc. *grin*

              • Being a total beginniner at this I am SO happy with my first harvest! I picked 10 strawberries this morning for a lovely anniversary breakfast with my fiancee. Also managed to pull up 5/6 rather large radishes for a salad tonight. Finally I couldn't resist picking the largest of the pea pods and broad beans pods. We ate the 7 peas straight out of the pod (oh my they were YUMMY!), but the broad beans tasted quite bitter out of the pod. Is that normal??

                • My first ever radishes! About 5 or 6 big ones, so yummy fresh out of the garden!
And some parsley. To make a lovely quinoa tabbouleh salad.

Oh and the bunnies will be getting their first radish tops, they will be pleased!

I've never eaten beans straight from the pod.. I know that when they start to get larger in size they should be cooked as they can cause upset stomaches (the contain a toxin that needs to be boiled for 10 mins to be broken down).. shelled or dried as far as I'm aware. That said, when I grew broadies last year I wasn't that keen on them - not sure if it's because I didn't know what to do with them mind!

I dont know if it helps but when I have broad beans I always pop them out of their skins (cant think off hand if I do it before or after cooking, must be before!). Its a bit of a faffy process but they taste so much better for it, IMO.

You only really need to do that when they get bigger, if you eat them small the skins haven't really developed but the beans are smaller. You takes your choice

Re harvesting, yesterday harvested lettuce, raddish, spinnach, peas, mange tout, new potatoes and broad beans. Very happy with that lot

Oh yes, and strawberries of course, soooooooo sweet

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

continually picking the strawberries, masses of them this year which is good news as SWMBO makes a great strawb jam
