  • Went to the lotty on Sunday afternoon to do a bit of interim watering, just to keep things alive until I could give them a thorough soaking (which I did this morning), and was surprised to discover that one of my courgettes had ballooned out from a tiny thing too small to harvest to a decent-sized marrow in three days. Took it home, split it down the middle, scooped out the seeds and pith from one half, stuffed it with veggy sausage mix, and roasted it with spuds and lotty-grown frenchies. Delish! Got more normal-sized courgettes in the fridge to use up soon, as well as the other half of the marrow.
Also got lots of kale at harvestable size, but I may let it grow on, and then make sauerkraut with it. Made sauerkraut for the first time last year, and loved it. A bonus is that my son hates it, so he doesn't pinch it!

      • Peas (meteor, hurst greenshaft, onward - they were'nt all supposed to be ready together!), pak choi, baby spinach, tomatoes, courgette, turnips. Also made a tablespoonful of white currant jelly from my first (tiny) crop.

        • Strawberries, getting towards the end of them now, peas and yes, I did eat a good lot of them before they reached the kitchen. Onions. Didn't try any of them! Loads of basil ready to cut and freeze, that's tomorrow's jobbie.

                        • My first proper crop of broad beans (The Sutton). Three smallish hanging baskets yielded enough for 2 people and I left about the same amount finishing growing.
Successful experiment not only did they look good when in flower, they cropped well and tasted great (just a knob of butter).

                            • Two carrots - a good size but not sweet enough - poor DS spat his out! Other than that the usual herbs, dandelions, shepherd purse etc for salads.
Is there anything that isn't made better by half an hour pottering in the veg patch?
