  • Harvested several firsts for me this year:

    Two crookneck squashes (hooray!)
French beans (beautiful maroon Blauhilde, which turn green as they cook)
Beetroot (Boltardy and Alto. The Alto has a lovely cylindrical shape but doesn't taste as good as the Boltardy, which is delicious)
And carrots (Long Lisse de Meux, fragrant and crunchy)

Made this lovely beetroot and feta soup. It's a Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall recipe: BBC - Food - Recipes : Beetroot soup with feta

Also harvested, with a bit of disappointment:

Onions (some not much bigger than shallots) and taters (not many and some look a bit poorly). Also, no idea what half the taters are because the lettering washed off their I.D. sticks in the rain!

            Cucumber

            Tonight:
            French beans
            Runner beans
Carrots (st. valerie / jeannette / norfolk giant (more like norfolk scrawny dwarf)

Dinner was awesome as a result of my efforts. I feel like I might pop.

              • Courgettes. Basil, basil and even more basil. It's been so easy to grow this year that now I have a glut! Oh and more Minibell tomatoes.

                • Two more courgettes, one yellow and one stripey. Some French beans (Cobra) and some runner beans (Moonlight).

Some blackberries off the hedge at the bottom of the allotment next to mine. The plotholder doesn't use them and the thorns attack everyone who walks along the path, so sweet revenge

Four Sungold tomatoes out of the greenhouse, too.

                      • A massive cucumber, some kale, Orla spuds, runner beans, more onions to dry in shed. The cooking apple tree has one apple on it!! What a red letter day it will be when I harvest that one.

                        • Noosner!

We'd harvested an entire colander of runner beans by 8am. I'm starting to think chutney... Later I'll pick a Little Gem and various herbs to have with my lunch.
Is there anything that isn't made better by half an hour pottering in the veg patch?

                            • French beans. I love the Blauhilde - they are purple on the vine (which makes 'em easier to spot) but go green when cooked.

                              Lettuce. Spring onions. Tomarters.

                              • I haven't made it yet, but will probably use Nigel Slater's recipe (being a big of a fangirl). Apparently it's similar to piccalilli. I looked into making runner bean wine but lots of people said it's like sherry, which you couldn't pay me to drink.
