  • Yesterday I picked a load of Baby leeks to thin out the beds, they were bigger than expected being up to 3/4 inch thick. but when we came to eat them they were as tough as old boots, not what you would expect from such small leeks. They were part boiled and then baked in a cheese sauce with cauliflower. Any ideas why they should be like this?

    • Did you plant them very early and were they starting to bolt? I find my leeks go tough in the spring when they start to form flower heads.

      • 2 nice garden meals today - lunch was Desiree potatoes, lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes and orange pepper with a bit of chicken, and dinner was stir fried courgettes, carrots, tomatoes, potatoes and a bit of bacon, followed by blueberries and ice cream.

        I do love summer

No they were planted out at pencil thickness in early June and definitely not bolting, maybe they will get more tender when they mature.

Very strange. I hope they improve for you - nothing more disappointing that harvesting something that looks good and turns out to be much less nice than you expect.

              • 4 little tumbling toms tomatoes! The rest are either still green or still at the flower stage.

                • Pink Fir Apple potatoes, about 2 lbs of runner beans, half a pound of French beans (lunch! Yummy), baby beetroot (to eat with the French beans) 2 cucumbers and 1 courgette that is now a marrow (piccalilli) and a courgette that is still a courgette, about 2 pounds of Katy apples, brought my garlic home and 2 pounds of onions - piccalilli. When the greengages are ripe I am going to need a wheelbarrow to harvest them into. The trees are laden. And a handful of tomatoes from the glass shed.

Is there anything that isn't made better by half an hour pottering in the veg patch?

The proof of the growing is in the eating.

                              • Oh dear! The courgettes are out of control. I popped to the plot to grab a few aubergine from the poly for a ratatouille. My round courgettes are the size of medium pumpkins. Grabbed two, three aubergine and a couple of handfuls of green, yellow and purple French beans.

Wow, holidays away from the plot in the summer are the worst idea ever. Everything has gone super crazy. I think my weekend is going to be spent harvesting and weeding.
