Today I mostly harvested my first Fin de Meaux gherkin. Ate it to see if it was ok, and if I could then pickle at that size. Was yummy, so will be pickling at about 3" once they grow.

Life's disappointments are so much harder to take if you don't know any swear words.
Today, we had leeks done a la the Doorleys (alternative recipe). Steamed lighly for 5 mins and then wrapped in parma ham. Covered with a cheese sauce (which incorporated an egg), mature cheddar grated over the top and baked for 25 mins. Delicious served with bbq'ed steak and roasted potatoes.
I managed to overwinter some rocket and land cress in the cold frame, plus some lettuce and was really proud to have harvested that in March/April. Now onto the mixed salad leaves grown this year, plus a mixture of "spicey greens" (bought seed from Marshalls I think) that are great in stir fries.
But this week, I ate 3 FANTASTIC, GORGEOUS strawberries from the cold frame. The variety is "Christine" and I'm going to buy more plants for next year.....home grown stawberries in May MUST be worth the effort!!
Today we had some of the GH broad beans, baby carrots and onion gravy to go with some toad in the hole and we used the last of the stored bramleys to make into an apple crumble - it was all luvverlly....
I am so excited that i can post on here!!! We have got some new potatoes, some cut and come again leaves, wild rocket and some radishes, making me hungry just writing this.
Oh nearly forgot last of the Spring cabbage too.
When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. ~Author Unknown
lettuce thinnings, some of the radishes (a few of which were eaten by the slugs!) and my first ever baby courgette! it was only a wee thing but very tasty.
I harvested one of my tubs of garlic today. I have been picking them one by one for a month or so, but I only had 8 left in there so I decided to pick the rest and dry them in the conservatory, we have garlic plaits keeping the vampires away!
I picked my first broad bean today for a munch while gardening, it was the size of a big french bean and lovely! Another week and I think the first crop will be ready.
I am going to finish off a spring cabbage for dinner tonight too, that will leave three enormous ones in the garden!
My mind works like lightning, One brilliant flash and it is gone!
