  • sorry to rub it in but got today a really good crop of spring onions,frisee lettuce,radish,more toms and ot some eggs from a local farmer so going to have a big salad tonight with some grilled fish yum lovely x

      tracy..... Rub it in all you like darling.X. When you've put your precious thought, time, and effort into growing something that you're looking forward to harvesting, I can't think of anything more lovely than 'Rubbing It In'. No other person deserves the credit.
      That is one luxury that deservedly has our name on, and one we should be proud of.X

        • Just back from a stint at the allotment (weeding last of the couch grass....my back is killing me!) and have a good handful of sprouts (Bosworth, my Wellington all blew) a big handful of my first purple sprouting broccoli and two little cauliflowers (that were meant to harvest in December, but hey, I'm happy - they are the first I've ever grown!!), going to be a tasty roast tomorrow

          • Kind of with the new growing season approaching, I fondly re-read some of the earlier postings on this thread from almost a year ago, and had to smile to myself out loud.....

            I was asked to start this thread, so I did, but it has given me the most amazing amount of joy to read about just what's happening in each and everyone's own gorgeous growing space. Doesn't it feel great to go and pick your own dinner?
            Honestly, I can't quite get enough of it myself.....
            Tell me that I'm wrong by the end of the growing season: Everyone that you know that DOESN'T Grow Their Own Fruit'n'Veg, are verbally extolling the virtues and superbness of your Allotment or Home-Grown Produce when they come to visit you and see what you're growing?.
            You know why? Because it looks THAT gorgeous, that they want some, and to them - it's free.
            To you - it is Tender Loving Care, and you can't wait to eat it.
            Am I right?!
            As Nicos so rightly said: " Mmm! Radish & Rhubarb! but not together, obviously...." (!)

            Please. Don't put off sowing stuff, promising yourself that you'll do it tomorrow, or next weekend. Do it now. It only takes minutes out of your day or evening, and 'A Little Bit Here, A Little Bit There'.... I promise you.... you will be harvesting some gorgeous crops later on that you'll truly be proud of.

            And if someone flatters you sufficiently for your liking on how beautiful your produce looks, then YOU decide if you're willing to part company with it.

            • Today i harvested 6 lovely brown mushrooms from a kit i was given for Christmas, was thrilled to see many more mushroom babies poking through too! I have combined them with last nights left over roast chicken to make three chicken & mushroom pies.

              • Newbie, isn't it exciting?! Just bought some new spawn from Wilko to start more off for us this year too.

                At the moment, I'm still only harvesting the minimum. And that would be some outdoor green garlic foliage (from cloves that I missed digging up last year in amongst some wayward Raspberry canes(?!), and using herbs that I dried myself (Lemon Thyme, Sweet Marjoram), because I'm making Trousers another Chicken Risotto tonight, just because he loves it.

                • I DO love it when Trousers cooks Sunday Lunch, as it means that I get out to play in my greenhouse for hours'n'hours on end! And today, he harvested a whole saucepan-full of Red Brussel Sprouts and Green Brussel Sprouts from our Kitchen Garden....
                  They were very small, but tight little buttons, and tasted delicious, even though I say so myself.
                  If the Curly Kicking Kale and Savoy Cabbages don't pick up soon, I shall be forced to talk to you, at length, and on a regular basis, about Red & Green Brussel Sprouts, until they run out. Sorry about that! X

                  • 3 sticks of forced rhubarb and one head of broccoli/calabrese. These did not thrive, even under fleece and this is the only plant of 10 that formed an edible head. The rest are only 12" tall and have mini florets.

                    • Not much left i'm afraid, but i did take home a couple of celeriacs. Probably have them tomorrow.

                            Today Mrs. Iron took the last stalk of Bosworth sprouts, the last savoy and four musselboruogh leeks. Did them with chicken breast stuffed with roquefort, and a bottle of Malbec. Beat that for a monday night
