Hi Pottage, I'm growing a mini variety and don't prune mine much but as the plant grew bigger I removed the lowest leaves and the lowest cucs to give the newer growth and cucs further up a better chance. Although i understand that many people remove the laterals also.

When it's home a lateral is a shoot coming off the main stem...when it's out on the town it could be anything...

Cucumber vines should be pruned when growing vertically. They produce a sucker stem at each leaf node, similar to tomatoes. However, you DO NOT take out the sucker stem right at the main stem, but instead you let it grow to the first leaf. There will be a leaf and a tiny cucumber forming, and then a continuation of the stem. Take the stem off after the leaf and new cucumber

            is this right?

Awww thanks Fi, I've just left it to it's own devices really and chastised it when it gets unruly!
That's a lot of stuff you're growing! There'll be a feast at harvest time

My first year growing too. I have a new plan after getting slightly hysterical at near death of my aubergines.
                          Most things WANT to grow.
Stick most things in the right soil and they WILL grow
                          Dont stress it
And they have 2 choices grow or perish!

I would suggest read lots, loads of past threads about all the stuff you are growing. Ask lots of questions and dont be afraid of looking like an idiot. That jobs all mine
