  • Pumpkins for seeds

    Hi
I grew some Lady Godiva pumpkins this year for the seeds, the catalogue said the flesh wasn't suitable for eating so had to add (could hardly lift them) to the compost heap. These were recommended as the seeds are "naked" and once dried, jolly nice they were too but it seemed an awful waste.
My question is are there any other varieties with unhusked seeds that I can grow where you can eat the flesh and the seeds.

Funny you should ask this, because I was given a packet of seeds for my birthday (yes, I think some girls get diamonds!) which were from Chiltern Seeds and called "Pumpkin Nuts". I've just had a quick look on their website and it says the variety is good for seeds and the flesh for eating, so it might be worth a go. I haven't grown it yet, so don't know if this is the case but we could both have a go next year and see!

    Good luck.

I just went to Sainsbury's and as part of my shop bought a 'carving pumpkin'. I had to laugh when I went to the fresh veg section and saw diddy little pumpkins (mini versions of the carvers) labelled 'edible pumpkins'. What! And mine isn't!? Well we ate last years 'carving' pumpkin and will jolly well be eating this one aswell!

Thanks for that, just dug out my Chiltern seeds catalogue and found the ones you refer to, I'll give them a go and we can see how we get on next year. And Waffler I'm afraid to say I've never eaten a pumpkin before (sad but true) and after having to saw it open, it looked rather uninviting. As my project this year is getting to like Chard I shall make 2007 the year I discover the delights of pumpkins.

Waffler - I know what you mean. We have one giant one that will be carved on Monday for Halloween and the innards will be turned into marmalade on tuesday or wednesday.

              Hi running muttley.

I'll have to dig out Oct 2005 GYO mag and will do so when I have found it.

              It is incredibly easy though.

I've asked the same question DDL and was informed there are none, but that may be just the earlier issues.

Hi running muttley, I've posted the marmalade recipe under season to taste.

With regards to pumpkins for seeds, can I roast any pumpkin seeds. Probably seems like a daft Q but I do like them occasionally and will have far too many once the pumpkins are all carved. (Mr E bought a tiny one and a medium sized one at the farm yesterday).

Pumkpin seeds are easy to roast EB, just coat an oven tray with a little olive oil, spread the seeds out so that they arent touching each other, add a sprinkling of salt and roast on a high heat until they are crispy, very tasty! Be careful not to overcook them tho, they are easy to burn!

Make a great dish of nibbles for the Halloween feast, and even better when folks who have been munching them for 10 mins ask what they are and look really shocked, not realising that pumpkins are for eating aswell as carving!

Thanks Suzanne. I'll give that a go. I may even present some to the TnTs tomorrow night. They may consider that a trick though. Although given the price of decent pumpkin seeds those in the know would consider it a treat.
