How many aubergines per plant?

Hi all,

Just trying to decide how many of the aubergine seedlings to keep and the main concern is how many aubergines am i likely to get per plant?

Depends on the variety.

I have never managed more than one per plant if I am lucky, they are so hard to grow.

I had trouble eating all mine last year off 5 plants but they were in the greenhouse and started from seed in february, they got to nearly five foot high (thats the plant size not the size of the fruit )

Sorry, should have provided more information. They are going to be grown in an unheated greenhouse. I have 4 of Bellezza Nera and about 12 from Lidl's range (I think it's called halftange violet, but seed box not to hand).

Trying to decide how many of the 12 to keep I suppose

They were aubergine Black Beauty, I think they only did so well because I started them the beggining of feb and didnt take them to the greenhouse until may and until then they were under grow lights.

I didnt restrict how many fruit either, I even rubbed every flower they formed to promote fruiting. What I foung was that they got upto around about 15 fruit forming happily at different stages but above that the new forming aubergines started going brown and rotten on the plant.
any that started doing this were cut off and put in the compost heap.

If you read the instructions or read most articles giving advice they usually say restrict them to 4 or 5 fruits, yes they get bigger quicker when you do that but hell I love them and want more from each plant.

Thanks Chris, I have got black beauty and Listadia. They are in the greenhouse during the day. I left them out once overnight and they really didnt like it!

The pictures in the catalogues always show the plants laden with fruit. I always assumed they must be quite easy. I'm growing a couple of plants for the first time this year.

We usually get 3 to 5 fruit per plant, last year we grew 3 plants, of the varieties black beauty and Calliope F1. This year we've added another Italian variety, and are growing 8 plants in the greenhouses!

I have six on the go at the moment and they seem to of germinated quite well and have been going for just under 3 week's. My Grandad has kindly donated an old parraffin heater to me and now the greenhouse is kept at a nice temperature so I am hoping this will help me in my first year. I have also read that your should restrict the plant to about 5 fruits but I am with Chris on this one I am going to exceed that and try to keep the plant well fed.

Chris, how often if at all. do you feed your Aubergines and what compost do you grow them in? I was thinking of using this Miracle-Gro Organic Choice Fruit & Vegetable Planter but I will empty the bags into seperate pots.

i thought i was being excessive when I germinated them...didn't realise they would ALL come up....
