  • "Trailing" veg

Is it possible to stick some veg into the container and put it on the roof of the shed?It would save some space-I thought if some cukes and tall legumes can go up the canes how would they behave trailing? If it's ok then harvesting would be much easier.I'm just curious, has anybody tried this or is it me just being mad?

    Hiyah C
I said on an earlier thread that to escape the slugs I could create a roof garden on my garage!

I think its a good idea! lets all grow HIGH

Well, as I usually say - there's only one way to find out.......

As long as you can water them, why shouldn't they?

I grew upside down toms once out of the bottom of a plant pot that was then strung up - and the only problem with those was the watering.....so why not try hanging climbers?

They will probably try to grow up but the weight will drag them down.

Lots of piccies as they grow please.

If you want to start a new thread when they are sown, called perhaps 'The Upside Down Experiment' or 'Growing Up High' or even something witty, then we can sticky it and see how it goes. I guess you might get others joining in [me included].

How will you stop them blowing/falling off the roof?

I suppose the pots would need to be heavy weighted down - maybe those large plastic crates or wooden crates. As long as they are not top heavy then they should stay put.

My concern would be water sitting underneath the pots for long periodsof time, make sure your roofing felt is in good nick..

If you come across Sweet Pea Currant Tomato seeds, for next year maybe, they can grow in a "waterfall" in bunches like grapes (but the size of a pea). Trail up to 6' and I'm trying them in hanging baskets. Could trail over edge of your shed. I got my seeds from plant-world-seeds.com

Sounds like an idea to me. I know you can grow runner beans as ground cover, you just have to accept that you will get curly beans. Some of the problems could be, watering? weight of crop pulling roots out of compost and how you would train them?

Go for it................ and let us know how you get on!

I grow Trailing Tom cherry tomatoes in hanging baskets, and Roman strawberries as well. They're all very successful so you could try them on your roof!

What are Roman strawberries and should I be growing them?

I have also put some in the garden as well just in case it doesn't work. I weighted them down with gravel in the bottom so watch this space.....
