  • Compost: dig in or dress surface?

Dug out another bed this weekend which I intend to use for sweetcorn and pumpkins/squashes. The soil is fairly free draining and until being dug had a covering of thick unruly grass. As I am using a raised bed system, would I be better digging in my home made compost or using it a a mulch a couple of inches thick. I also have access to some horse manure, however this is very fresh, could that be dug in or will it scorch the roots? I intend planting the bed early in June.

I was told that fresh horse manure can be soaked on a bucket for a week, pour off the water then use....
Never test the depth of the water with both feet

You need to compost the horse manure for about a year before use.

RedThorn is talking about making a feed ... in that case you use the water not the manure, which rots down in the barrel / bucket

Also apply compost as a mulch if possible. Worms prefer to pull their food down rather than have it dug in for them.
Remember though to water the ground well before applying your mulch.
