  • your chilli recommendations

i want to grow a few chilli plants for the first time but im bewildered by the hundreds of different varieties.

im leaning towards hungarian wax at the moment, does anyone have any other recommendations and is there any difference in flavour between them all.

Well I like Jalapeño, some say that they are tasteless but I think they are really juicy and have good flavour. You might also like Santa Fe Grande which are similar to the Jals.

Check out the Chileman database, it might help you in your quest for great chilli's!

If you're going to grow from seed then it may be a bit late for some varieties this year. Are you growing them primarily for culinary purposes or because they look good? Are you just going to use natural light or will you be using growlights? How hot do you like your food?

Sorry for the questions, I'm not trying to put you off, but these are all factors in choosing what's best for you. If you want the easy route to some tasty chillies I'd recommend buying some established Apaches from somewhere like Homebase.

You might also want to look at this thread , this thread and this thread if you haven't already.

this is a lovely site. The chillies are listed in heat order, more or less: Chilli seeds and chilli seed advice from the expert growers - South Devon Chilli Farm

thanks all. i would probably be growing them inside on a west facing windowsill, no growlights, hopefully theres still enough time left to get a few if theyre kept indoors. after reading all that info i think im going to go with Pimientos de Padron, prairie fire and maybe super chilli or just take pot luck at homebase on their 99p plants.

could be wrong but i'd have thought 2 foot is more likely than 2 metres...

Pimientos de Padron can get to 3-4 ft high and about 2 ft across. When red they are well hot.
