Putting tomatoes outside

Hi All, I have grown some tomatoes which are now about 2foot high. When will be ok to put them outside? I have been harding them off but need the space for other crops...

Mine have been outside for about 10 days now. They got too big to keep inside and I had no way or hardening them off so out they went.

1 is getting really big now the other 3 look fine but have not really grown much.

Mine went out yesterday as I needed the space in my unheated plastic greenhouse for other stuff. However they have been hardening off in there for the last couple of weeks. To be on the safe side I do have lots of replacements in case of disaster that were sown later. Fingers crossed

If you have more than 1 of each variety... perhaps keep 1 back, this should help a bit with the space constraints. I'm adventurous with timing my planting out but my toms are still in the greenhouse. Personally I wouldn't take a chance... I chance it with things that I can grow more of and or grow quickly eg courgettes and beans. That said though my sweetcorn is in the ground already...

Know-nothing alert here - what's a full smiths period?

It's to do with temperature and humidity. A certain amount of humidity couple with above average temperatures for over a certain period of time is a smith period, I think the temp is above 10 and the humudity above 90 percent.

Taff, we're certainly having some huMUDity here today with torrential rain, my paddocks are under water.. a bit past the humidity stage.
