Just to throw in yet another couple of methods I haven't seen yet - this year I put mine into a clear plastic tub (with lid - old hummus pot) with damp vermiculite. Got almost 100% germination within a few days. Mind you I put the rest into Rootrainers with peatfree compost and got 100% germination out of those.

Last year I put them into a bit of damp compost in a sandwich bag, so I could put them on top of the fridge to keep warm (sandwich bag was the only thing that would slide in between the top of the fridge and the worktop) - that worked quite well too. Maybe it's more about the batch of seeds, rather than the germination method?

Hi womble. I sowed mine directly into root trainers, small pots and toilet rolls, put them in the greenhouse and had virtually 100% germination - no soaking etc. I have sowed runner, borlotti, blue lake - same as yours, your yin yang, cupidon and aquilon. Good luck with your next sowings!

Thanks all, I got fed up with waiting for this lot to come through (still haven't) so I have sown a load outside, might be a bit cold, but if they do come through, they will be tough little things.
        Fingers crossed.

Btw, was waiting for 2 courgettes for ages to come through in pots inside, they wouldn't, so I sowed more seed.... nothing. I got fed up, put the pots outside, all that wind, rain, cold weather, yep, both courgettes came through.

Please ignore everything I say, I make it up as I go along, not only do I generally not believe what I write, I never remember it either.

Must try that with my Sweet Dumpling squashes. None came up last year - thought it was me! None again this year from the same seed - but every other squash I've sown has come through. Must try sticking them out in the cold!
