Thinning onions

Hi I'm growing (or attempting to grow) onions in a large container. I grew them from seed and now they are spring onion size. I never thinned them and I think they're too close together. My question is can I thin them now? and can i replant the thinnings to grow into bigger onions or should i just use them now as little ones.

i would try both ...eat a few and plant a few on ....as an experiment ...I only grow spring onions from seed ..i always grow my main crop from sets....
