Earthing up potatoes with sharp sand?

The potatoes are grown a touch too close to each other so been moving soil from one bit to another.

The soil is clay and a bit indestructable. The bed already has manure in it so just wondering if it's a bit silly to earth up with sharp sand as we've got to put some in later to make the soil a bit loose?

can't see a problem with it at all as long as you don't use builders sand. the main reason for earthing up is to stop any spuds near the surface going green, so basically it's just to block the light.

why not builders sand?

salt and stuff, it's not washed like horticultural sharp sand apparently

If you've a lawn you could use grass cuttings.
