  • Salad every day

    Hi all,

I was just wondering, how much plants would you advice to have to have a few fresh leaves in a salad or sandwich everyday (at least during the summer). Would like to try it this year, but they would have to be grown in pots on a balcony so not sure if I will have the space.

    Thanks for any advice.

You could get a few of those troughs from wilkinsons to put your salad seeds in- and sow sping onions in the spaces between seeds (That's what i've done)

Sow seeds in a trough maybe every three weeks (Successional sowing) so you'll have a steady supply over summer- get some small-medium pots that you can put either on balcony or on window sill to sow stuff like spinach, rocket etc... You can sow lots of seeds in the pots and pick some leaves as baby leaves then leave the rest to grow on.

    Hope this helps

You could get all technical and work out how long a pot/tray of salad will last you and how long it takes to grow them. Say for instance a pot lasts a week and it takes 6 weeks to grow then you need to have 6/7 pots on the go. As least if you do the rough calculations you will have some idea if it is feasable. Good luck.

I like the mix that Suttons do called Speedyseeds Leaf Salad - lettuce mixed. It is cut and grow again for pots or garden. It grows really fast and luxuriantly, and lasts for ages -- two sowings in the garden will do us right through to October.

A 6" pot of watercress will go a long way once it has got to a harvestable size and will keep growing for the rest of the summer.

gojiberry: Could not resist the idea of working some calculations into my growing

Does anyone have an idea of how many pickings I could get out of a CCA lettuce if I only took 2/3 leaves at a time?

Or you could chuck seeds at a pot of compost when you remember, which is what I have done Seems to be working
