Tomato Variety Identification

Hi all,

Need your help, got a few toms here which the kids sowed in school, labelled as 'Red Tomatoes' by them, it was a busy day that day lol! Can you tell the variety? They don't have the normal serrated sort of edges more like a heart shape, what do you think? Could they be Red Alert?

They look like a potato leaf variety. Both of the potato leaf varieties I'm growing are Beaf steak varieties.... sorry but not much help as I'm not growing and haven't grown red alert before. All the searches I did returned pictures of the toms but not the leaves... However I did find that there are a few cherry toms with potato leaves

Red alert has the usual cut-leaf shape. You didn't sow galina did you?

In the usual confusing world of gardening this image from google is described as Red Alert bush tomato.

It also has potato leaves so yours could be Red Alert.

What other varieties did you sow ??????

Now you see, I really wouldn't call that potato leafed. The individual bits are spuddy but the whole leaf is indented much more than my potato leafed ones are.

You could well be right, Flummery. I do know that potato leaved types can have some indentations and the leaves in the pic seemed to have a "feel" of potato leaf to me.

I'll do some "digging" and no doubt grovel and apologise to you later !!!

Odd - just the other day I bought two plants from Homebase and noticed how one of the plants has a different leaf to the others.

"potato leaf" - fancy that, they do as well.

The one I bought was beefsteak I think.

Flummery, I've checked the net and can find no reference to which leaf Red Alert is. Normally if a cultivar is regular leaved then no reference is made but if it is potato leaved (ie less common) it is stated, so it looks like you are correct.

However, comparing the leaves in my picture I still think they are more potato leaved than regular !!!

I tried to google 'red alert' and only got the tom pics not the leaf. It is a variety I have in my seed box, can't see it being the others, but I have:

Gardener's Delight, Maskota and other usual varieties and it's driving me mad!

I think it is Red Alert, but can't be 100% sure, it's for a RHS comp for school, so got to be right, help!!!!!!

My Marmande's have a simular leaf to the pics of the red-alert that people have posted, a cross between the normal and potato leaf.... has slight points on the edge of the leaf. will go and check what the earlier leaves looked like tomorrow if you like. As what I can see of the leaves you posted MrsC, is they look more of the shape of the pure potato leaf

You didn't plant any Bloody Butcher or Outdoor girl did you. I think they are similar leaf.
