  • Potatoes in Roottrainers

    Literally.

These were grown from slices taken from potatoes that had sprouted in the fridge [shop bought]. Then, put onto root trainers, and covered. You need the sprouty bit and about 5mm [1/4 inch] of the potato underneath it.

The other day my OH said those 7 magic words [Do you think we have enough potatoes?]....so I am planting 2 roottrainers worth of these at the lottie in response. I'll then use more of these in pots in the greenhouse for a late harvest in the autumn.

I am amazed, but I'm not sure why. Over the moon though!

If you haven't used roottrainers before, the scale is that they are about an inch wide.

I did a double take at the title, then thought, oh its zazen, no wonder

I did imagine a spud shoved down a rootrainer until it jammed, then a bit 'o compost shoved on top.

      Reminds me of sweet potatoes.

They used to do this in the war all the time you know

Please ignore everything I say, I make it up as I go along, not only do I generally not believe what I write, I never remember it either.

I know, that's where I got it from. [research, I wasn't around during the war].

I'm just surprised that they have grown so quick, and so big in such a little space. Almost new potato sized one of them.

I've got another set which are going in at the weekend, where the foliage is at least twice the size. I can't wait to see what's down there.

You can also cut up seed potatoes into as many bits that have sprouts I believe.
          <funny voice on>
Not many people know that. </voice off>

If she does, it's going to be a pretty small harvest

I was planting them in the allotment when I noticed how much they had grown. They were going to go into pots.

I'm curious, what is the reason for starting them off in root trainers if you don't mind me asking?

I would guess so you can open up the 'envelope' and see what is happening - whether you are getting spuds or not

Don't forget they started as slices of spud with a sprout in - not whole spuds.

A few weeks ago, after Zazen mentioned she was doing this, I took three half-inch long sprouts that had been rubbed of a potato before it was peeled for tea.

This thread reminded me to go and check the pot and.....

I'll open a sweepstake on how many tubers I have by the end of the season !!!! ........... unless it's only a weed !!!!!!!!!

I am amazed that the shoots might grow. Never even thought of that.

So that they can grow roots before planting out.
