Advice on cucumbers

Hi there,

I would like to try gowing some cucumbers this summer. Am I too late to do this now?

If I am not too late I'm thinking I might grow them in the conservatory, is this feasable do you think? And also do they grow upwards or along the ground?

Any advice greaty appreciated.

Hi Eve, it's certainly not too late to grow cucumbers, plant the seeds individually in small pots and keep them warm - your conservatory would be ideal for this. I would think they would be ok in the conservatory but I normally grow mine outside (there are lots of varieties suitable for outdoor growing eg Burpless), they seem to do best with some support such as canes, you will need to tie them gemtly to the cane to start them off climbing until the tendrils take over. If you grow in the conservatory it might be best to buy a greenhouse variety - have a look at a seed website and see what takes your fancy!

I put my last 2 cuc's in this morning, having grown some novelty ones as well.
If you're growing indoors, in a conservatory you shouldnt really have a problem with them taking off, but I would recommend a climbing one otherwise it will be all over the floor fairly quickly.

Not too late for cukes, but as Vicky suggests, if you are going to grow in the conservatory, you might be better with an F1 All Female Variety - these will produce their fruit off the main stem so it's a bit easier to keep them under control.
