  • New & Hi + Help !!!!

    Hey everyone,

First thread on this site so hi to all,

Firstly i am 21 years old so not sure how old (or how young) people are with growing veg???, but i enjoy it.

Anyway my query, I have a single veg plaot which is a new area which i have developed under where a unused bit of lawn was.

I rotavated the patch (sorri) and then single dug etc. Got a rook a stones out. All i ever seem to do is be taking stones out though. The soil seems to have a lot of clay in it so i broke it down with a bit of sand. Brill.

So how bothered should i be with stones? can it get addictive trying to remove them?

    Regards Daz

    Hi Daz

I dont think I could get addicted to removing stones! For things like carrots a stone free bed is better but most other stuff should be on unless you have rocks!

Cultivating the soil in some gardens round here seems to throw up the same problem. The more you dig, the more you find.

Also use them in pots for drainage. Welcome! What are you going to grow?

Well....so far we have a some salad potatoes in for a July / August harvest. IN the other bed we have radishes, spring onions, carrots, broccoli.

Its a bit of a trial and error this year. I feel we are slightly too late with certain things but its all good fun.

            do you soil up leeks?

You need stones to help with dranage. I would leave them unless they are brick sized.

You can still grow plenty of stuff for later in the year. There's still time for courgettes peas runner beans and salads are better later when it's cooler anyway
