  • Is it time to plant out French beans ?

My Dwarf French bean seedlings are about 7 - 9 inch tall now, I have hardened off them outside for a couple of days, just wondering if it's time to plant them out in the veg bed in our garden, or it's still a bit early ? I live in West Yorkshire. I am new to vegetable gardening, any advice would be appreciated.

The weather is so nice and warm, can't wait to plant them out

Some of mine went out 3 weeks ago and have been fine - so we are putting all the others that are over 4 inches tall out this weekend. They were hardened off for a week each prior to going out there though.

I'd say yup- put them out- but have your fleece to hand..it can often drop below 5C until early June!!

Thanks for the advices, just planted them out, hopefully they will be fine, they are too big to stay in the tiny containers anyway.

I planted 4 out last week to 'test the water' so to speak. I now have 3 1/2 stems left. If you are going to plant out young beans, make sure the slugs leave their climbing ropes and crampons at the garden gate. I'm leaving the rest of the plants in safety until thy're big enough to look after themselves.

I muclhed mine with grass, it seems to have confused the slugs so far...and the cats...fingers crossed...

I put some out yesterday and noticed this morning that one has been munched by the snails. I'll be sowing some back ups tomorrow, meanwhile put some organic slug gel down and we'll see if that does the trick.

Had slugs problem in the early spring, they ate half of my young tulips, and mint, but luckily I found an organic Slug pellets which worked very well, never had any slug problem since then.

We were given 2 HUGE bags of sawdust the other week by our lottie neighbour so everything is getting mulched in this once it is planted out....and no slugs yet.

I planted my climbing beans out last bank holiday weekend at the beginning of May! And they are all doing well. I did it so early only because they were going to out-grow my mini green house very soon.

I started hardening mine off yesterday, they'll be planted out at the end of the week after I've (hopefully) persuaded the OH to build the bean frame

Lot further south than you guys but my French and runner beans have been out for four or five weeks now, thinking that if they continue at the current rate will be pinching the runners out next week or week after.

Most of my beans went out today...the ones that didn't only missed out because I couldn't find a place to put them...I've even got runners in my cutting flower patch
