I have a theory about warm water

If seeds need sunshine and warmth to germinate, and some seeds (like beetroot) germinate better after a soak in warm water, does it make sense to water seeds with warm water to encourage germination?

And what is it about pouring boiling water on parsley seeds?

I have always used warm water to water seedlings- seems a bit daft to use freezing cold water- bit of a shock to the little things!

I water them in the evenings from a watering can filled with water that has been warmed up throughout the day, not harmed them yet.

i always do my seeds with warm water,

my daughter is doing a project for school and planted 4 pumpkin seeds
1 with warm water in greenhouse
1 with cold water in greenhouse
1 with warm water outside
1 with cold water outside

the 2 in the greenhouse are
warm water 6" high
cold water 5" high
nothing yet outside
this was all started a month ago,
shes been taking photos every week for her project
and it quite impressive
shes only 12

I would have thought that all the chemicals in tap water could have an effect too; my cat prefers rainwater.

I think it is pour boiling water in the drill before yo sow the seed...

it's been a while since i heard it, but i think that right.

I thought pouring water on parsley 'broke' the seed and started the germination. I sow into modules and have got good results from pouring a little boiling water on them when they were sown.

I also use warm water esp during the winter to water the little babies. This time of year it comes mainly from the water butt.....if I have to use tap water it gets left to warm up a tad before watering.

I always keep a couple of full watering cans in the GH.

This is interesting. I also keep a filled watering can in the greenhouse so the water is 'acclimatised'. I never use really cold water.

Treat with a little kindness and you'll reap the rewards.

I use anything I can get my hands on. Cold water from the tap sometimes, then water from the tap left in the kitchen overnight, now it's water butt water, as there's too much to justify using tap water on a meter, plus everything is more or less a teenager now and deserving of something to complain about

I always use warm water to water anything in the propagators, but if sowing any hard seed like sweetcorn or beetroot then I put them in a bag or cup and put hot tap water on them the leave them for a couple of days before planting, usually they start sprouting pretty quick doing this.
