Sprouts, especially red ones

Been talking to friends today who have said their sprouts are on the small side this year. Is it just a bad crop this year in the Midlands area or is it a common problem this year?

My red ones were absolutely pathetic. The few (really small) ones we picked tasted good, but overall a waste of time. Him nextdoor grew ordinary green ones and they looked fantastic. Finally went over to the lottie today and pulled the remains out. May try again next year in case it was the weather, but will also grow some green ones. Any suggestions as to varieties?
