  • My poor tumbling toms - Will they recover?

I put my tumbling tomatoes out in hanging baskets a few days ago and they were looking really happy and healthy.
Sadly yesterday the weather turned evil and they were hit with major gusts of very cold wind
Now the poor things have broken branches (some not all) and are looking really sorry for themselves.
Does anyone know whether I should cut off the broken branches straight away or wait and see how they get on. This is first time growing in hanging baskets so not sure what's best
The broad beans also got flattenned but seem ok now that I've put canes and string round them.

I think it depends on how broken they are whether you cut them off- it's going to be difficult to prevent it happening again- so it might be a good idea to remove some of the vulnerable bits.

Thing is- you can pot up the pieces you cut off ( remove flowers and plant deeply) and get new plants, so it might not be so bad after all.
I think a new site might be a good idea though

      Hi Nicos,
Thanks for the advice. It's the leaf branches that took a battering the sideshoots actually seem better off than the main plant so maybe I should try and get a few extras off some of them. Different site is not an option though. We have a large southfacing garden with a good size piece given over to my veg. but the hanging baskets cover every wall ( garage and house) as well as being on 3 custom made basket posts my OH kindly made for me.
I am attaching a pic of some of the baskets before the evil wind so you can see.

They look great!!!..what a nice idea!

(..they'll need watering a fair bit a couple of times a day though when they get bigger and it it gets much hotter)

Watering would be a pleasure as it means we're getting a summer
As they are in the garden it's pretty easy to stay on top of watering them. It's a job the OH enjoys too. Best done with a glass of wine in the evening or coffee in the morning

I would say they'll probably recover. They seem to side shoot like crazy so I'm sure they'll soon replace the lost leaves

              Thanks Tamsin,
I hope you are right. Too sad to take an after pic still though.
