Borlotto Beans

I planted an intended small crop of Borlotto Beans - but not this small

5 of the 15 I planted rotted away before germination.

New growers beware - DO NOT over water your beans.

My Borlotto Beans are not too good either.

The first leafs that came through went yellow and died off but all the new ones are thankfully looking better. They are very slow to grow and I wonder what made them go yellow. I think too much exposure to the wind when they were young might have done it.

Was thinking of buying some more and planting a few beans inbetween the existing plants??

Mine are still in pots, about 3" high. They really don't tolerate the cold, or cold winds.

No no no - mine rotted in the pots and never germinated

First time growing beans of any kind - lesson learned the hard way as usual.

My beans are also incredibly slow to grow this year. They haven't died completely but they haven't changed size in weeks!

Give it another go when it isn't so cold at night.

I read somewhere with beans that you should plant them on their side because this is where they naturally want to rest and that aids germination, so that is what i always do. Seems to work, so give it a go. I have started my Borlotti beans off in a heated propogator, when they came up i moved them off and onto a table in the bay window in the house which gets lots of sunshine during the afternoon but is unheated at night.
Won't put them out for a while yet though.

Yep me too. These are doing fine in a raised bed and are about 6" tall now. However the direct sown ones in a container are only just starting to poke through.

Yes, I've had problems with them too, so put the whole packet onto a couple of layers of damp kitchen paper on a plate and then covered it in clingfilm, every single one came through!!! I planted them, grew them on, hardened them off - all going mighty smoothly, so planted them out last week and are now totally battered by the wind, hardly a leaf left on I've bought some more and am having another go, I'm not going to give up (well, not just yet!)

It only gets worse.

The 5 that did grow have now been decimated by the wind and rain, and I only planted them out 2 days ago.

No more seeds either to resow so I think its time to look for a seed swap.

getting some bits from Lakeland and saw these seeds on offer so got some as I fancied growing some borlotti seeds

Not worth getting the pack on it's own due to the delivery charges but if you're getting stuff from then anyway then not too bad (I know lakeland stuff is expensive but I have a serious gadget addiction )

I've never had luck with borlotti but I still keep trying. Am starting another lot tomorrow. I work near the river cafe restaurant be they grow their own so will try to get some tips!

I sowed mine FAR too early and they shot up so I HAD to plant them out a couple of weeks ago (after long and careful hardening)... They have slowed right down and look a bit battered with the wind and rain, but although one will probably die, the others still look OK. Guess I will stick a few more seeds in if they take a turn for the worse!

I'm generally too late rather than too early, as I find the most plants seem to catch up with earlier planted ones. This is part of the row of borlotti beans that I planted out four days ago and they seem to be quite happy and ready to take off.
