wobbly onions

Hi

I know that brasicas like the soil to be firm and compact, but my onions are not firm in the soil, even tho they seem quite deeply planted.
Do most veg prefer a firm soil?

The onions sets don't want to be too firm or they won't be able to swell into onions. It always amazes me how the roots go down and grip the soil to support the top weight. If the birds do pull any of them out just push them back in again.

From my experience, if they are wobbly they have probably got White rot.

Perhaps that is because they are too deep? Some look ok, but other look like they are leaning and not secure.

My onions never grow "upright" like other people's and tend to sprawl over the soil.

Still get onions though.

If they aren't secure, and wobbling, I'd pull one up and see if it has white rot.

how deep is deep? The set (bulb) should be only just below the soil. Don't push the set into the soil, because this compacts the soil around the roots and will push the set back out again.

Instead make a little loose hole and pop the set in.
