I have inherited a couple of redcurrant bushes from previous occupants of my allotment, however they look very unkept with branches going off in all directions, some branches have a few currants right at the top with little or no growth below this (leafs or currants) can someone tellme what thebest plant ofaction is with this I have tried to read up about pruning but I am particularly confused about what to prune and when. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I just got some white current bushes this year too, and I'm starting to wonder how to prune them. I know that with berry vines you cut them almost right down to the ground, cause fruit only grows on new growth. This sounds to be what's happening to yours - there are only berries on the top new growth.
When I bought my bush last autumn it had around 5 branches approx 2 foot long each. Now they are around 3 foot long and there are berries everywhere. I'm thnking of cutting them back to around 1.5 foot and hoping for the best??
