  • Blight???!!!

    Morning All

Just gone out to check my potatoes and one of the plants on a few leaves has what looks to be blight (brown splodges around the outside of the leave)... Picked them off but am not surprised after the past few wet and then warm days we have been having in the South East...

Probably wind burn. Let's see if anyone else from your area has any problems before we panic.

There are only 2 confirmed reports of blight to date- in Cornwall..

fingers crossed yours is wind burn as Flum suggests

If in doubt - spray- there were reported cases earlier than this last year.

Very early for blight and because it can be so bad we all seem to panic and often misdiagnose at the first sign of trouble. Put a piccie up and people will be able to better advise.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Some of my potatos leaves have gone yellow. Do you know what causes this?

Sorry to hear about your potatoes Raindancer411. August's issue of GYO is going to include a feature on tomato and potato blight and the best ways to avoid it, so hopefully you'll find this useful over the next few months.

I am going to guess it is wind burn. You can get blight testing kits to make double sure. At the start of June I will start to spray my spuds with Dithane 945 every week to prevent blight.

Me too tattieman....I was going to start a couple of weeks ago but it has either been far too hot or far too windy.

So, I'll start next week and spray in the evening.

Can you buy this from Garden Centres? I'm only in my 2nd year of growing tatties. Last year I only did a couple of tubs but this year I've got 6 huge tubs on the go plus a load of the allotment so I'd be gutted if anything happened to them!

No, lots of us don't as we garden without chemicals but you do take the risk of getting it and losing everything. Last year was the first time I'd ever had a problem so I'm crossing my fingers this year. Did buy supposedly resistant varieties of potatoes but I know the same can't be said for my outdoor toms.
