Hope you're healing well laying down! Best you rest and get well soon rather than push yourself and make things worse?

I'm sure your OH will do his best with your containers, now the weather is picking up things should grow better but will need more watering. Maybe you should concentrate on planning for next year - you can start in autumn with over-wintering crops or 'green manures' on the raised beds?

Make the best of what you can do - enjoy the summer, get a good sunbed!

Concentrate on getting better- and being good company!!! ( you'll need all the friends you can get over the next few weeks!!)
Ask your OH if he's actually interested ( be honest time)..if he's not- then it's an extra job he can do without esp having to take on all the things you normally do about the house and garden - and caring for you. He doesn't need the extra pressure if his heart isn't really in it.
You don't want to put him off for good

If he wants to- that's brill- if not- can you donate the plants to friends and neighbours- and maybe just keep one or two for you..so at least you feel you're still growing something?
Hope you have a speedy recovery

...just thought- are there some gardening DVD's at the library you could watch- to increase your knowledge???
You tube has loads of clips on pruning , growing etc...make the most of your 'rest period'

Cripes - poor you - that must have hurt.

Just teach him a few things - give him big seeds to sow and get him watering DRY pots every evening. Esp winter squashes that you can enjoy hopefully when you are up and moving again. Plus, beans and peas.....and get him to buy some organic slug pellets. Then, leave him to it....and let yourself get better. You need to rest and let those bones heal!

Oh, comfrey is good for that, I can send a cutting or two if you want some. I just planted some out yesterday but it can come back up again - I've got plenty and it is dead easy to look after.

And, as well as a good sunbed, get some sunscreen. We don't want you getting burnt.

        Take care of yourself.

          Cripey!

Rest, rest and make sure you rest. You have one back, an arm or leg you can use the other one, but a back...

          You knew that anyway.

Not much I can add in terms of what to grow etc. but look after yourself first, the rest will follow.

Thanks guys i,ve had time to think and have decided to put things on hold carry on with what i have done but not worry about the things i can't do . He has done his best but i cant expect him to do anymore,I can water the garden with the hose but bending down not possible at the moment, so will build raised bed in a couple of months and see what i can grow in it for the winter.

That's the spirit focus on what you can do and get done... the rest is not worth worrying about! All the best. Look at it as an opertunity to study loads and put into practice unlike myself who looks for the answers after it's gone wrong

The important thing is to get better first and worry about everything else second. Don't be tempted to push it, you will only end up back a step or two if you do over extend.

                  Seconded...
You come first, not the veg. Do what you can but don't take on the world

Commiserations Topcat I hope you're not in too much pain.

I think you've made the right decision - watching my OH half killing most of my plants and seedlings has been absolute torture for the last few months He really can't see the point in hardening off, so stuff gets left in all day, or, out all night, and watering the greenhouse every day? Nah, surely that's not necessary... I'll be amazed if we manage to get anything edible at the end of it!
Anyway, I attempt to stay sane by reminding myself that there's always next year

I would just like to reinforce those that are saying not to push it, in the long run it really is not worth it.

I understand how frustrating it is not being able to get up, and for the next couple of weeks that frustration will really get to you especially as the weather picks up, but if you push it then your next lay-up may be for a far longer period.

In 2000 i had to have surgery to snap and straighten my spine, meant not even lifting anything as heavy as a kettle for 2 years. I was a little lucky in that my problem had been with me for a very long time before the surgery and i had got used to listening to my body but i forced myself to be very careful during that time, even now sometimes i have really bad days but i know it would be much worse if i had pushed myself too much during that first 2 year period. The spines ability to recover is remarkable but it needs time and you will appreciate having given it plenty of time to rest.

For pain relief the tablets i found best were Tramadol, you do need a prescription for them but they are tailored towards spinal pain and 1 three times a day can really keep the pain at bay so if it aggravates you a little too much ask your gp to prescribe them.

I wish you all the best with it.
                      Paul.

TC - its a no-brainer - you concentrate on getting well and fit first above everything else.

If those around are able to grow a few things to maturity - its a 'Brucey bonus'.

Just get well asap - and if the result is a reduction in what you're able to do - just adapt and do what you can.

Take each day as it comes - and I sincerely hope that your strength will return, and you'll be back to norm asap!

Yep, yep, yep. Couldn't agree more with all the advice already posted. Acceptance of the situation is the name of the game here, and making the best of it.
In a few months you'll be back on your feet and able to put into practice all the fantastic ideas you've had while mending. You should keep a notebook to hand to jot ideas down as they come. Just be a "Sunbed Gardener" for this year.
                          Wishing you well,

Thanks again for well wishes and advice. Just popped out to garden now to have another look at things and decided to rescue some seedlings that needed watering and hose not connected yet so lifted up little watering can with foot but then couldn't bend down to reach tap and turn it on so went in side to fill it up so think i saved me brussels but realised the neighbours opposite who already think i'm loopy must now think i have lost the plot.
