Poorly Lettuce

Being a novice I planted my lettuce seeds too close and everytime I gently replant a big one it goes and dies on me.
Should I leave them alone or keep trying

thin them by nipping off the leaves with your nails instead of transplanting, eat the thinnings
then plant some more

Hi, when i 1st started growing veg, i used the seed tapes, (and before i get shouted at about them being expensive !) i found them alot easier as a new grower, as the seeds are spaced the correct distance apart on the tape. i used buy a packet of seed plant them as per the packet and think, thats not enough put some more in and end up with squashed veg ! x

Most of the lettuce I transplant do OK. I find the art is to be a little light handed with them, try to take a bit of soil with them, plant into the new hole making sure the root is no deeper then before. Gently infill the hole, no need to firm in. Water and they should do fine.

I sow everything individually in little pots. Yougart pots and the like are good.

It makes potting on easy, reduces seed waste (and seedling murder!) and in the rare cases where nothing appears, I just pop another seed in.

With my lettuce i dug down under them with my hand fork and took a big chunk of soil with them, i also watered them first. I also transplanted them first thing before the sun was on them so they weren't suffered stress from the suns heat too. I made sure i firmed them in too.
However i have also just let some grow to about 6 inches and ate them as baby lettuces in a salad which were lovely
