I would personally use bigger canes for runners - but as previously demonstrated I have a thing for big canes!
When I planted them I though the wigwam would be TOO big
This is my first year growing anything, so I'm learning all the time. Thanks Wayne
Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that, I'll be over
    here, looking through your stuff.

Hey - as demonstrated I'm still learning too. I'd wager that I'm still learning 20 years from now with any luck.

I'd guess it's sensible to use canes that you can reach the top of. Might be why I use 7-8ft canes come what may.

That is exactly why I use 6ft canes, with a foot in the ground

Hi Wayne my canes were too small for the runners last year and because I didn't know they could be "stopped" at the top, they almost climbed all the way back down them. I've put 8 footers in this year, so hope they climb with the same amount of enthusiasm as last year.

I use 8ft canes and I'm only just over 5ft so I have a bit of a problem tying the tops together, so I do a fancy basketwork type weave as near the top as I can get with some heavy binder twine, this has to last until I can persuade OH to come up the lottie and tie them for me. (The lottie is very much my territory!) Just hope we don't have a gale before he gets there!

I use old metal mesh fencing panels to grow beans against, the climbers go at the back and the dwarf/nain (aka bush) go at the front so the climbers cover the fencing and when the dwarfs are finished I can pull them and get some other crops in.

                Runners are on the corners.

                  School boy error alert.

On the plot the other night and I thought "those dwarf beans look mighty tall to be considered a 'dwarf' variety".

On closer inspection of the label I read the following: "Climbing French Beans - Box".

Must learn to read my own writing.

I'd clearly read the word "French" and made the association that they were dwarf too.

Yeah, but in the meantime, I moved the canes round and planted runners between each "dwarf" plant. Might get a little congested when it comes to harvest time!
