  • Are carrot tops edible?

    hi everyone,
i am growing carrots and there is tonnes of green foliage, it seems a shame to just get rid of it if there is something else i could do. Are the leaves edable? if so what sort of thing can i do with them.

hope to hear from you all soon

Never tried them...but my thoughts are that if you picked them yong they would be a sweeter version of parsley.
Would probably make a nice tissane (tea)...just found this site for tea...

Carrot Tops, Tomatoes & Blackberries / Homeopathy / Fiona Wray

" Quote......"For anyone interested in trying it, just take a handful of fresh carrot leaves (preferably from your own garden but if not home grown then very well washed to remove chemical residues), place them in a teapot, steep in boiling water until the water has cooled, strain and chill. The result is an amazingly refreshing and tasty drink beneficial for all sorts of urinary complaints but also a good general cleanser and natural detoxifier for the kidneys. It keeps well in the fridge for a few days "...unquote

They're not poison Annette so you can eat them - it's just a question of do you like them.
Melt a little butter in a pan, throw in the carrot tops and stir until wilted. Taste and see what you think.

I've never known of a horse that refused carrot tops.

My chooks turned their beaks up at them too, despite going MAD for carrot peelings.
Their favorite is dandelion leaves.....hence my excuse for not turning my efforts to sorting out the front garden!

Mine don't like carrot peelings either. Dandelion leaves seem to be a favourite with everyone's chickens though!

Slugs are grazing over my tops. Will the roots send up new leaves?

When I was a kid people used to call me Carrot Top. I am still a red head but now it's no hair. Just a red head. (Apologies to all. )

                              P.S. I've tried them - 'orrible.
