  • Purple Sprouting Broccoli... is sprouting..?

Hey everybody, got a PSB question for you; i did have a search through previous threads but couldn't find anything, so hope you can help...

I recently planted some PSB plants out in my garden after having hardened them off. They proceeded to completely take over my teeny veg patch so I decided to re-locate them...

I figured they wouldn't enjoy being moved but they seemed to bear up ok. On checking them this evening though (substitute babies!!) i noticed that a couple have started to sprout already. I wasn't expecting this until much later on next year; do you reckon it's 'cause i moved them and now they're not happy? Do you think it's ok to eat the broccoli?

I've never grown PSB before so any advice would be really appreciated.

    When were they actually sown?

Did they get pot bound before being planted out?

Well i got them from a garden centre as tiny little plants a couple of months ago. I put them straight in the ground when i got them home so they weren't pot bound and they were doing fine til I moved them the other week...

Could well be PSB variety called Bordeaux which has had the cold requirement bred out of it and crops in the same year. In which case its doing as its suppose to as our trial beds have just started to get some spears. A superb variety - one of our best sellers.

If they are sprouting......of course you can eat them, and be assured that there aren't many other people who are eating PSB at this time of year. (Apart from me of couse!)

I have summer sprouting broccoli which I planted out a week or so ago, it is a whole 5 inches tall and one plant has its first spear! I hope it will continue to grow and crop

I sowed Bordeaux in Feb as a trial and it has been fantastic. It has cropped just ahead of the beans and peas when apart from lettuce and a few leeks there is not much of any quantity to pick. It has especially been good cos broc is something that the kids always eat and it means I don't have to share my board beans with them!!!!!!
