  • Advice re: feeding dwarf beans & peppers

    Hi all,

We're having a go at growing some things again this year. A couple of quick questions:

    Dwarf french beans in pots
A couple of years ago we grew some which worked really well, plenty of tasty beans! They stopped producing beans after a while, which is to be expected no doubt but I was wondering whether they'd actually stopped due to over feeding with the wrong stuff. I didn't get round to removing them from the pots and after a month or so of neglet they started producing again (although this second crop was much smaller and not as tasty as the first).
So, what should I feed them with? At the moment the seedlings have been transplanted into a standard veg growbag compost. I'd anticipate leaving them until they start fruiting but then would like to make sure they're getting all the nutrients they need to have as long a growing season as possible

    Peppers in pots
Having less time than in the past, we cheated and bought a pepper plant with fruit on it already. This has been transplanted into fresh compost. I assume feeding with tomato food is OK, but should I commence feeding now, as the plant is already fruiting?

    Thanks in advance

    Chris

Yes, start feeding your peppers with a weakish solution of tomato food every week from now until the end of the season.

Re the beans, they don't need a lot if they are in the soil but will benefit in pots. Mine got some tomato feed the other day as I had some already mixed up but I normally use a seaweed folia feed on them which seems to work well so long as you don't do it when the sun is on them as then you'll end up with leaf scorch.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I tend to feed mine half the recommended strength at least the first few times and then sometimes continue like that but feeding twice a week rather than once. Not sure if this is a good thing to do but it seems to work OK for me.

Yes I have been using Maxicrop Seaweed extract on all my beans, peas, peppers and brassica's since I planted them into their final positions/pots. It has worked really well particularly with my pea's. The sugarsnap has shot up.

I even gave a little bit to my tomatoe's in addition to the tomatoe feed, not in the same week though. May not be correct but they are looking good for it.
Those that forget the past are condemned to repeat it!

Maxicrop Seaweed extract is not a feed or a fertiliser.

It claims to "remove or reduce the influence of a number of growth constraints".

            Whatever that means.

They make no claims to providing any food to the plants.
The proof of the growing is in the eating.
            Leave Rotten Fruit.
            Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potasium - potash.
            Autant de têtes, autant d'avis!!!!!
Il n'est si méchant pot qui ne trouve son couvercle.
