  • Cucumber question

    Hi All,
I am growing cucumbers for the first time this year and have 4 plants in my greenhouse. 2 have been planted in the border and 2 are in pots.
Although they all have much the same conditions the ones in pots are looking much healthier and happier than the ones in the ground which have much paler leaves and don't seem to be developing as quickly.
The ones in pots have fairly dark green leaves and the ones in the ground are bordering on yellow they are so pale.
Does anyone know why this might be the case? The toms planted in the same border are very happy

Does the border contain as much compost as the pot? I've been told that cucumbers are pretty hungry plants and like nice nutritious (sp?) ground to grow in.

Yes the border was filled with compost last year and had beans grown in it ( a beginners mistake but good for the soil) we also dug in chicken pellets a week or so before planting in it this year so if anything I would expect it to be better. They certainly have more soil than in the pots

As I didn't get much response to this I thought a picture might help some of the more experienced grapes to see what I mean.
As you can see, the one in a pot is looking really good while the 2 on either side in the ground are looking, if not sick, certainly aren't flourishing in the same way.
Any suggestions on how I can improve them would be very gratefully received.
        Thanks in advance

Are the ones in the ground in more shade than the pot grown one? Only thing i can think of, but i'm sure someone who knows what they're talking about will come along soon!

If anything the pot ons have more shade as they are surrounded by quite large tom plants

are the ones outside getting less watering? It hasn't been raining much in the last while so they probably need daily watering.

maybe that's the answer, I recently planted my all in to raised borders in the greenhouse and have lost half of them with the other half looking very worse for wear. Before planting they were in pots on a bench protected from too much direct sun, now they're not so I assumed they were sun burnt.

                    Thanks SMS6,
I'll try and find a way of shading them more and see if that helps

I put mines in the ground in full sun, they didnt like it one bit. Got sun burnt and growth came to a standstill and eventually started wilting.

Before that they were dark green and healthy when in their pots before transplanting.

When i transplanted it was windy, so i made a wind breaker with a piece of wood to protect them, this also created a lot of shade for them during the time when the sun was at the strongest. They seemed fine for the next 5 days when the wind break was still in place. They carried on growing as per their pots.

Took the wind break off, and growth halted, they got scorched and then started wilting. Dug them up and noticed hardly any new roots. Put it in a shadier part of the garden. For about 4 days it looks like it wasnt gonna make it...Looked a sorry state. Then it just started perking up again and now its growing healthy new leaves.

Conclusion seems to be they dont like too much sun, even though it says on the packet to put in full sun. ..Toms in the same place love the full sun though!

with this rubbish weather they now have plenty of shade. If they start to pick up then it's definitely a too much sun issue. Thanks for your help guys
