Crop rotation

Hi all, I'm very worried about this crop rotation malarkey.
I have a very shaded garden with heavy clay. There are only a few areas in the garden that get full sun during the day, so that's were I'm growing my veg. I have the main veg patch, but also 2 potato areas.
Next year is going to be extremely difficult to rotate my crops, especially the potatoes. I can't put the potatoes in the main veg patch, because it will look odd, due to their height (and the veg patch being in the middle of the lawn!)

What I'm asking is: is it absolutely essential to rotate crops?

No it's not essential to rotate.

Why worry about spuds growing in the middle of the lawn? If the aim is to grow veg then aesthetics are secondary IMO.

Personally, I'm fine with spuds growing in the middle of the lawn, I'm not really bothered about the garden being presentable, it's just *cough* other house-hold memebers that have problems with it

Then grow beans in between the spuds and the house. Disguise the spuds.

Perhaps grow potatoes in bins or potato bags?

I have found that "other" members stop moaning when they taste how good the food is

I am totally converted to potatoes in bins or pots. They are much easier to harvest and you just take th eones which wre boig enough and leave the rest to grow. No heavy digging ( I have clay soil too) and teh spuds just need a quick rinse rathe rthan washing and scrubbing

Grow some with pretty purple flowers. Then claim you didn't realise they also gave a good eating crop!
