  • Bean leaves turning yellow

    HELP!

I haven't had many beans germinated (trying another set now) and the ones that have germinated have been in the ground for a week. The leaves are turning yellow. They are in clay soil and the soil has not had manure added. I've fed them with a seaweed feed today, not sure if that will help.

The beans are saxa drawf bean and climbing french beans.

The weather hasn't been that cold and they've been watered by the rain and by me when needed, do they need more water than normal?

Where are you? It makes a difference. Can you put your location into your profile.

Done now, I'm in the South East, W Sussex so had a few night of below 10C lately but nothing too dramatic.

did you harden them off, or stick them straight from a greenhouse into the ground? If you did, they'll sulk a bit.

Sorry, the ones that are turning yellow are the ones I stuck straight into the ground.
The new set I'm attempting to germinate will be hardened off. They did get a bit chomped by slugs but now have copper collars on them.

Beans aren't supposed to be this hard are they? I've got flowers on my aubergines and mini cucumbers and been eating courgettes, just getting thoroughly fed up with the damned beans.

edit to add: thank you for taking the time to help two_sheds, you're always really helpful on here

Yellowing leaves on beans usually means they have felt the cold. Fortunately, unless they actually die, you'll get new green leaves as the weather improves - lets hope it does!

Right, so it's not me killing them. Hopefully the weather will improve and the new set of beans will go out when it's warmer.

              Thank you Flummery!

                Hi there..

Just to let you know that a few of the leaves of my french beans that I put straight in have turned a little yellow, but it looks like there are some new leaves on the way!

And they'll be green - unless we get snow!

French beans are notorious for sulking at the start of the season and even a couple of nights below 10 deg is enough to cause them to have yellow leaves. They will usually pick up and give a good crop. Would suggest growing a few runners as well as the are more tolerant at the start of the season.

... only I don't like runner beans! They have a rough texture I can't get on with. I prefer to grow loads of different french beans, dwarf and climbing.

So why don't the experienced Grapes come on here and say "don't plant your French beans too early" hey?
