  • Spring onion variety?

    Steering carefully away from the 'who isn't picking anything yet' thread...thanks to Pigletwillie's patent spring onion module growing technique we have just harvested our first ever spring onions! Well they're a tiny bit small but I wanted to try some. They taste quite good, but not too strong, I'd like a bit more kick so perhaps if I'd left them longer - the next lot will no doubt tell.

    Anyway this lot are 'white lisbon' the next lot coming along are shimonita. What are your favourite tasting spring onions?

    I have the white lisbon too.havent tried any other variety yet,but i do like the white lisbon,been having ours with salad for a few weeks now

        I have some white lisbon which seem to be doing okay (thanks PW - my best success with spring onions yet!) but the Ishikuru (think that is what they are) never showed at all.

          Interestingly enough Manda - I pulled my first ones today. The variety is from a pack of T&M's Sprouting Onion Seeds....10 times the amount for the same price but you don't know the variety - as you can see they are a mix of all different types.

          Mine were sown into jiffy 7s, and I am well happy with this method.

            I'm no picking my second sown lot. First is finshed but then I only do one large pot at a time.I can't remember what they are and not going outside to look lol, they are either white lisbon or ishywatsits. From wilko anyway.

            Mine were quite powerful Great in a cheese sarnie

              I am growing Rossa lunga di Ferenze which are a red spring onion variety and very yummy!

                I have Ishikuru but nowhere to pick them yet.Modules didn't work for me.

                  Last year I sowed some 12 month old sp onion seed and got nil germination, that's when I bought the Ishikuru seed to try, they were growing in no time and seem good and hardy, this year I'm trying another type (can't remember the name ) but they are red sp onion. They also have germinated in pots OK and are waiting to be planted out in the next few days.
                  I you'st to have a handle on the world .. but it BROKE!!

                    White Lisbon is doing well for me. I could pull them but will leave them to get a bit bigger.
                    A couple of weeks ago we finished eating the spring onions which had stood right through the winter - White Lisbon I think.
                    I plant red onion sets and shallots shoulder to shoulder and pull them for spring onions when I have none.

                    From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

                      I have some sucess with Holland Blood Red, my White Lisbon didnt amount too much, I think the seeds were well beyond their sell by date or just rubbish at growing spring onions

                        my white lisbon look rather pathetic....... i sowed direct about 2 months ago, germinated well but they just don't want to fatten up!

                          We have been eating white lisbon for a few weeks, think I may have overdone it on the sowing. Got loads of em!

                            I've found that none of my onions grow well if sown direct.

                            How about an experiment?

                            Pull up a handful, and replant them. Water in and leave them a few weeks and see if there is a difference.

                            Either there will be none; or the direct sown will be fatter or the pulled and resown will be fatter.

                            It's just that if my onions are looking like they aren't doing anything, I pull them and replant and it seems to spur them on. It could just be me, but I'd be interested if someone else tries this.
