I believe the propagation method for banana shallots is to leave them to seed; I don't think they split like most other shallots.
I looked into this a while back and they only produce the one thigh shaped shallot.
Someone might be along with differing advice, in which case I'd be very interested.

This is taken from my website :-
Banana Shallots or Echalions.
So called “Banana Shallots” or “echalions”, are best grown from seed each year. You will get much bigger shallots and they do not go to seed in the first year. Again, growing from seed eliminates bringing disease into your plot. Be aware that many of the banana shallots sold in the shops to eat, have been treated with a sprouting inhibitor chemical and will not grow. Even when they do grow, they will split into useless skinny shallots and rapidly run to seed.

I've got loads of them to plant out yet!
Here's a question though (could have started a new thread but couldn't be arsed!).........what makes a shallot a shallot if it grows one bulb and tastes like an allium? Are Florence red onions actually shallots for instance? Can onion's and shallots cross pollinate creating shallions or onioshalls?

Shallots grown from seed only produce a single bulb, the idea of seed sowing is cheaper and you get a bigger single bulb, you can also sow closer together then the traditional sets. There is supposed to be a difference in flavour between onions and shallots but I find once they have been added to a dish the difference is lost.
